How can we make walking and bicycling in Roanoke more comfortable?
If you walk, run, or ride a bicycle in Roanoke – even if it’s recreationally – we want your feedback! Typically before adding new street amenities, like bike lanes, transportation planners will consider safety measurements, predominantly relying on crash data. While pedestrian and bicyclist crashes are, fortunately, infrequent in Roanoke, they are also often under-reported. Further, near misses, which could be happening on a more frequent basis, are also rarely reported. This small set of data doesn’t give planners an accurate picture of what types of unsafe conditions pedestrians and bicyclists might experience on a day-to-day basis. The 2018 Bicyclist and Pedestrian Safety Awareness survey has closed. We received 472 survey responses between June and October, 2018. If you have additional feedback that you’d like us to know, please contact Andrea Garland at andrea.garland@roanokeva.gov
Study Background
The National Highway Safety Transportation Board selected Roanoke, Virginia to pilot a new Community-Based Bicyclist and Pedestrian Safety Assessment. This assessment will complement crash data and help the City of Roanoke identify trends and patterns that can be targeted with engineering, enforcement, and educational countermeasures.
This heat map of pedestrian and bicyclist crash data from 2011 – 2017 reveals a higher incidence of crashes at high volume intersections in the City of Roanoke. Please fill out the survey to help us identify areas where you perceive unsafe conditions for pedestrians and bicyclists.
